Guest WiFi for PGs and Co-living Spaces

A hotel checks a guest in and out within a day or two. A PG or co-living resident moves in for months, works from their room on video calls, streams every evening, and expects the WiFi to behave like their own home connection, not a guest network they log into once. Almost nothing about hotel guest WiFi actually fits that.

A hotel guest checks in knowing roughly when they’ll check out. A PG or co-living resident doesn’t think in those terms at all, they’ve moved in for weeks or months, they work from their room on video calls, they stream every evening, and they expect the WiFi to behave like a home connection they pay for, not a guest network they tap through once and forget. Most guest WiFi is built around a short, one-time visit. A PG resident is the opposite of that, and the network has to be built for someone who’s effectively living on it.

A resident isn’t a guest who forgot to leave

The single biggest mismatch in PG and co-living WiFi is treating every resident like a hotel guest on a long stay, a short session limit, a login that expects to expire. A resident who’s paying monthly rent doesn’t want to re-authenticate every few hours the way a hotel’s overnight guest reasonably would. Access Rules set per property can run a genuinely long session length here, matching how residents actually live rather than a hospitality default built for a one- or two-night stay. What still matters is a real per-guest speed cap: a house full of residents on video calls and streaming at the same time in the evening needs the same protection a busy hotel floor does, just applied to people who are there every single day, not just tonight.

Move-in and move-out is the actual daily operation here

A hotel’s guest list turns over nightly. A PG’s turns over in a completely different rhythm, residents move in and move out across a month, sometimes room by room, sometimes floor by floor as leases end and begin. Grouping residents by room or floor, rather than one flat resident list, is what makes onboarding and offboarding manageable: a new resident gets access the day they move in, a resident who’s moved out loses it the day they leave, without a warden or manager having to hunt through one long undifferentiated list to find the right name.

The login should feel like getting set up, not clearing a checkpoint

A resident’s first WiFi login at a PG is part of moving in, not a one-off hurdle. OTP or WhatsApp login gets a new resident online in one step without a shared house password that’s been the same since the PG opened and has probably reached people who moved out months ago. For PGs that run referral programs, vouchers double as a practical incentive too, a code for a friend’s trial stay or a referral discount, which matters in a business where word-of-mouth fills rooms faster than most other marketing does.

A resident’s number is tied to where they actually live

The phone number collected at login here is about as sensitive as this list gets, it’s tied to a specific address a person lives at, not just visits. Masking guest phone numbers by default matters accordingly: a warden or caretaker confirming who’s connected doesn’t need a resident’s real number sitting on a screen, and PGs, more than most properties, tend to have staff and caretaker turnover that makes masking-by-default the sensible baseline rather than an afterthought.

What an owner running several PGs actually wants to see

A single PG owner just wants their one property’s WiFi working. An owner running several PGs across a city wants a very different view: occupancy trends by property, which house has the most complaints about WiFi, whether a new property’s network is holding up the way an established one does. Multi-location management and usage reports turn that into one dashboard instead of a spreadsheet updated by phone calls to each warden. Staff-level access keeps it scoped sensibly too, a warden or caretaker sees their own property, an owner running the chain sees all of them, and nobody holds access beyond what their actual role at the business requires.

What a PG doesn’t need

Heavy login-screen marketing has little place here, residents aren’t browsing in for a coffee, they live there and don’t need to be sold to on every login. What does matter, more than at most short-stay properties on this list, is backup internet that switches on by itself: a resident working from their room during the day treats a dead connection as a real problem, not a minor inconvenience, and a PG that can’t keep WiFi up through a workday is the kind of complaint that shows up in reviews long after the actual outage is over.
